For the entry door of a new custom home, the appeal of rustic walnut was clear. Its depth of color and natural character offered exactly the kind of warmth the client wanted. Rockwood helped guide that vision by looking closely at the conditions the door would face and making sure walnut was a sound choice.
Because the door faces east and sits beneath an overhang, it is protected from the harshest sun and exposed to less weathering over time. Regular maintenance is still part of owning any wood door, but these conditions made walnut a more appropriate choice here than it would be at a fully exposed opening.
From there, the focus shifted to how the door should look and feel as part of the house. While walnut can sometimes read as formal, the client selected a rustic grade with more natural variation. Knots and grain movement gave the entry added character and helped it feel more inviting, in keeping with the home’s overall personality.
That same thinking shaped the design itself. An arched top and divided lites tied the door to the home’s exterior language, while the interior face carried through with matching proportions and finish. The result was more than a striking front door. It was an entry that felt connected to the architecture from both sides.
The hardware played an important role in that experience as well. Cast bronze was the right fit for the look the homeowner wanted, pairing naturally with walnut and reinforcing the character of the home. It also provided the performance needed for a substantial entry door, giving this daily touchpoint the same level of consideration as the door itself.
This project is a good example of how material choice, site conditions, and design have to work together. Walnut brought the warmth the client wanted, but it was the fit between the wood, the setting, and the design that made the door feel right for the home.
