In the hills of South Dakota, a mountain-modern residence called for interior architecture that balanced elegant lines and natural character. Rockwood partnered directly with the homeowners to develop a full interior door and millwork package that brought their dream to life.
Every door was crafted from rustic walnut with stave-core construction to ensure long-term stability. The package included paneled, arched, and pocket doors, some with applied mouldings nearly an inch deep on 2¼-inch-thick slabs. The scale and depth of these profiles gives the walnut a sculptural presence within the clean architectural framework.
Among other unique elements were the half-round pocket doors. The doors are rectangular yet close within an arched wall opening, creating the illusion of a continuous curve. Because the moulding profiles required a wider wall pocket, Rockwood thickened the door’s outer edges to fill the gap when it is opened or closed.
That same attention to detail extended throughout the home. Several doors featured curved glass panels shaped precisely to the arch radius, allowing light to move naturally between rooms. Kerfed jambs received the drywall to create a clean, caseless aesthetic, while concealed hinges removed any distraction from the design. Rockwood also supplied millwork for arched passageways reaching up to ten feet in height.
The homeowners came with a vision, and together, we shaped it into something tangible and lasting. The result is a collection of doors and openings that translate natural materials into architectural precision, demonstrating how collaboration can bring an idea into enduring form.
